Wonka Tops the First Weekend Box Office of 2024, Grossing $14.4 Million

Following its victory in the last domestic weekend box office of 2023, Wonka continues its winning streak by clinching the top spot in the first domestic weekend box office of 2024, amassing $14.4 million in ticket sales during its fourth weekend in theaters.

According to the latest figures from Comscore, Wonka has now soared past $164.6 million in North America and has garnered a substantial $465.8 million worldwide. Impressively, it experienced only a 36% decline from its previous weekend’s earnings of $23.9 million.

While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom held the runner-up position in the final domestic weekend box office of 2023, it was overtaken by the newcomer Night Swim this time around. Nonetheless, the Aquaman sequel did achieve the milestone of crossing $100 million in North America.

Night Swim, a supernatural horror film produced by Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, centers around a haunting tale related to a backyard swimming pool. It made an impressive debut, pulling in $12 million domestically, with an additional $5.6 million from overseas markets, accumulating a global tally of $17.6 million.

In our review of Night Swim, we noted its effective utilization of primal water-related fears, albeit acknowledging that its blend of comedy and horror lacked the strength to navigate through its more predictable elements, resulting in some clichéd aspects.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom secured the third spot, generating $10.6 million, followed by Migration at fourth place with $10.2 million. Lastly, Anyone But You rounded out the top five, accumulating $9.5 million in ticket sales.
