film is not dead yet, professionals say

filing for bankruptcy protection last week seemed like another giant step toward
the grave for film photography.
The corporate
implosion of one of the world's biggest manufacturers of photochemical film comes
on the heels of movie developing giant Technicolor's move out of its iconic facility
next to Universal City to smaller digs in Glendale last summer - and a current
round of layoffs in its film stock operations.
The
rapid rise in digital projection at movie theaters and electronic image capturing
for films and television has obviously reduced demand for 35mm film and prints
(and, to a lesser extent, the 65mm gauge used, among other things, to shoot widescreen
movies).
For all the end times signifiers, though,
many professionals are confident that real film is not dead yet. Some even feel
that it better not be, if we want to preserve our image culture for future use.
