FFV's Outrider CF DVR™ Provides Portability and Durability for the Film Industry

October 2, 2007

Fast Forward Video Inc. (FFV), a recognized innovator of digital video recorder (DVR) technology for broadcast, industrial video, presentation, and military applications, today announced that its Outrider CF DVR™ is being utilized by Munich-based ARRI Rental Deutschland GmbH, a manufacturer of products and technologies for all aspects of the film industry, in its new portable and durable Cineassist DVR.

Optimized for video back-up, offline editing, and fast creation of daily video rushes during film productions, ARRI's Cineassist enables onboard camera operation for steadycam and crane applications, and also can be used as a clamshell video recorder with an attached mini-monitor and battery.

The recorder's main processing unit is the FFV's Outrider CF DVR. Unlike hard disk or tape recorders, this solid-state system uses no moving mechanical parts, providing the reliability and durability needed for rough on-set applications. At only 4.9 inches x 2.2 inches x 0.6 inches in size, the DVR features all the advantages of a digital video recording system such as variable frame rates, instant playback, and extended control features via PC control.

With the Outrider, the Cineassist can record over two hours of video at 20:1 compression. The recorder provides 720 x 486 image pixel resolution and uses scalable motion-JPEG compression. Video is captured and played back at 60 fields per second with a resolution greater than 550 lines at 4:1 compression.

Video is recorded onto readily available CompactFlash cards as PC-viewable QuickTime™ files or secure video files, providing easy removal and transfer of recorded material to a PC via a USB 2.0 interface. From there, the video can be burned onto a disc that directors can view at their convenience.

"What distinguishes the Cineassist is its portability and durability," said Conrad de Klerk, electronics technician for ARRI Rental. "It's not enough to provide a director with immediate access to recorded material. The equipment needs to be able to go anywhere and perform under the harshest on-set conditions. The Outrider CF was a natural choice for achieving this. It features a very compact size, and has no moving parts, which makes it extremely reliable."

The Outrider is optimized for OEM applications and is ideal for high-resolution recording for surveillance, law enforcement, emergency first-responders, and portable broadcasters.

More information about the Outrider CF DVR and the company's complete range of digital video recording systems is available at www.ffv.com.
