ARRI launches Relativity, a new suite of software tools offering unprecedented control of texture and time using sophisticated motion estimation techniques.
ARRI Relativity software is powered by Pixel Strings, the first engine to fully harness the potential of GPU-based parallel processing for motion estimation and spatial-temporal image filtering. Marketed exclusively by ARRI, this technology was developed by Cinnafilm, a New Mexico software developer, teaming with Digital Film Central, a Vancouver post production facility, on the Texture Control module.
“In the last decade, film post production has been reinvented by the application of digital tools to the color correction and finishing process. Relativity takes the DI process to another level, providing interactive control of grain and texture, plus motion effects.” says Glenn Kennel, Chief Technology Officer for ARRI Inc.
Hand-in-hand with this progress, ARRI is pleased to announce the return of Richard Antley in the newly created position, Director of Sales, Digital Imaging. Antley recently served as Director of Sales, Americas for Digital Vision. Previously he worked for Imagica Corp. of America as Vice President, which followed a position as ARRI Inc.’s Product Manager, Digital Systems. He will oversee sales of Relativity, the ARRISCAN, ARRILASER and ARRIQCP in the Americas.
“I’m very excited to be coming back to ARRI, especially as the company is expanding its digital systems portfolio with image processing tools. There is so much market potential to address the needs and expand the possibilities for file-based workflows. I’m looking forward to my role with ARRI to help deliver this powerful new technology,” says Antley.

Texture Control - Control the level of film grain and digital
noise, mix and match the textures of
16mm, 35mm and digital images, for
a particular effect or visual continuity.
The entire Relativity software bundle is currently comprised of three different applications: Texture Control, Film Simulation and SpaceTime Converter, with more coming soon. The software suite is modular and easily configured to meet the needs of each customer. All tools have a simple interface with interactive visualization of the manipulated image.

SpaceTime Converter - Convert any TV or motion picture format into another,
with crop/zoom, spatial resampling, frame rate conversion,
de-interlacing and addition or removal of 3:2 pulldown through
an easy-to-use interface.
Says Volker Bahnemann, CEO of ARRI Inc., “We welcome Richard back to ARRI as we expand our digital product line with the Relativity software and broaden our customer base to include commercials post production and cross-platform media distribution.”
